Phnom Penh Audiology Clinic

One of the most acute healthcare problems in Cambodia is the complete lack of any provision for hearing loss. One of the contributory factors to hearing problems is poverty, particularly in rural areas, and many of those needing treatment are children. For many, there is little or no access to clean water and sanitation and people sleep on the floor.

The audiology clinic provides diagnosis with electronic equipment and a hearing aid workshop where all moulds are made, fitted and maintained on site by staff. The clinic also has waiting and examination rooms and an office. The area is small for the expanding needs of the service, and larger premises are being sought. Patients are often referred by the 42 NGOs currently working in Cambodia, others arrive by word of mouth. Should surgery be needed, regular visiting teams of ENT specialists from France and Nepal are consulted.

Patients who can afford it contribute to the costs of treatment. In 2011, a purpose-built clinic was opened in Siem Reap and other outreach clinics are held in other parts of the country with staff regularly travelling to hold clinics in rural areas.
