Milgris Trust & Haller

Family planning in Samburu, Kenya

Family planning education and awareness was supported through the development and use of Haller's “Repro rules” and bracelets. This has been very well received by many groups and communities of men and women in the Samburu region, an area of 60,000 square miles. Local groups are making the bracelets themselves for distribution to others, making the project much more sustainable and self-supporting in the long term. Local people are trained so that they are able to share their knowledge widely and as a result gently change attitudes towards family planning.

Women from other community groups have been requesting the training as well so that their communities can 'join the bracelet brigade'. In other communities further afield, the bracelets are in great demand. As a result of this project, these charities have been able to venture deep into communities to educate not only adolescent girls, but boys and older members of the communities as well. This project is having a huge impact and helping to protect the environment and alleviate poverty.
