The purpose of this project was to improve the quality of education at Bugulumbya primary school by investing in buildings and educational resources. This is one of the oldest primary schools in the area, dating back to 1924. In 1998 the community of Bugulumbya constructed a 6-classroom block with offices, but ran out of funds before the buildings were completed. Several approaches have been made for government funding without success. The school continues to use the inadequate buildings and children sit on dirt floors, unprotected from jigggers.

Funds were used to renovate and complete the classroooms, to construct new latrines, supply desks, and to renovate 4 teachers' houses to retain good quality teaching staff. Plans are developed also to supply two 10,000 litre water tanks to harvest the rain from the roofs.

The long-term project, planned over a number of years, has improved academic results, improve learning and helped to eradicate jiggers. The overall numbers of pupils is growing - important because it shows that the school is being supported by the community. In particular, there has been a large increase in girls attending the school.
